Background of the Study
Religious education has long been recognized as a vital tool in shaping moral values and guiding youth behavior. In the context of Jos South LGA, Plateau State, the interplay between religious teachings and the emerging challenges of drug abuse among students is increasingly significant. Religious education provides a framework through which students can interpret ethical issues, making it instrumental in influencing their perspectives on drug abuse (Adeyemi, 2023). The presence of various religious institutions in Jos South LGA has led to diverse interpretations and applications of religious principles in everyday life. As drug abuse becomes a growing concern among the youth, religious education can serve as a preventive measure by reinforcing moral and ethical boundaries that discourage the use of illicit substances (Bello, 2024). Furthermore, it is important to note that religious education also instills a sense of community and accountability among students, thereby contributing to a collective resistance against the temptations and social pressures associated with drug use. Local studies have shown that students who receive consistent religious instruction tend to develop a stronger moral compass, which influences their decisions and life choices (Chukwu, 2025). This background study explores the multifaceted dimensions of religious education and its potential impact on students’ attitudes towards drug abuse. In doing so, it acknowledges the role of socio-cultural and religious dynamics that are unique to Jos South LGA. The integration of religious education into the academic curriculum has been argued to foster environments where ethical considerations are prioritized, providing a counterbalance to the negative influences of peer pressure and urbanization. Moreover, the holistic approach of religious education addresses not only the cognitive aspects of drug abuse but also the emotional and social dimensions of the problem. In light of recent educational reforms and increasing drug-related challenges in urban areas, the topic warrants in-depth investigation to determine the extent to which religious education shapes students’ perspectives. As religious leaders and educators collaborate, the cumulative effect of religious education could serve as a formidable bulwark against the spread of drug abuse among adolescents. This study situates itself at the intersection of educational policy and community health, seeking to contribute to the body of knowledge that informs both academic discourse and practical interventions (Ibrahim, 2023). Through rigorous analysis and empirical evidence, it aims to provide insights that are both theoretically robust and practically applicable. These findings will be instrumental in guiding future educational strategies for progress.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of religious education in shaping ethical and moral perspectives, there remains a persistent challenge in addressing drug abuse among students in Jos South LGA, Plateau State. Many students continue to exhibit ambivalence towards drug abuse, influenced by various social and environmental factors that undermine the moral teachings received through religious education (Okoro, 2023). The disconnect between religious instruction and the daily realities faced by students is evident in the increasing incidence of drug-related behaviors, where traditional values appear to conflict with modern influences (Garba, 2024). This discord creates a critical problem for educators and religious leaders alike, as the effectiveness of religious education in mitigating drug abuse remains questionable. The current educational framework, although inclusive of religious teachings, often fails to address the underlying socio-economic and psychological factors that contribute to drug use among adolescents (Uche, 2025). Additionally, there is a notable gap in empirical research linking religious education with concrete outcomes in drug abuse prevention, leading to ambiguous policy directions and inconsistent implementation of curriculum interventions. The problem is further compounded by rapid urbanization and the proliferation of non-traditional influences that diminish the relevance of religious values in contemporary society. Without a clear understanding of the mechanisms through which religious education impacts students’ perceptions, efforts to curb drug abuse are likely to be ineffective. The inadequacies in current educational practices underscore the urgent need for comprehensive research to examine the potential benefits and limitations of religious education in this context. This study seeks to illuminate these complexities by analyzing the relationship between religious instruction and student attitudes towards drug abuse, thereby providing evidence-based recommendations for educational stakeholders. Clearly, innovative educational strategies are required to bridge the gap between religious doctrine and societal expectations, ensuring ethical instruction counters substance abuse (Lawal, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of religious education on students' attitudes toward drug abuse.

  2. To evaluate the role of religious teachings in shaping ethical decision-making regarding substance use.

  3. To determine the effectiveness of religious educational interventions in reducing drug abuse tendencies among students.

Research Questions:

  1. How does religious education influence students' perceptions of drug abuse?

  2. What aspects of religious teachings are most effective in discouraging drug use among students?

  3. In what ways can religious education be integrated into school curricula to mitigate drug abuse?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant relationship between religious education and reduced positive attitudes towards drug abuse among students.

  2. Students exposed to comprehensive religious education exhibit lower tendencies towards drug abuse compared to those with limited exposure.

  3. The integration of religious teachings into academic curricula significantly decreases the incidence of drug abuse among students.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical intersection of religious education and public health by exploring its role in preventing drug abuse among students. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and religious leaders to design effective curriculum interventions. By illuminating the influence of religious values on students' behavior, the study contributes to a broader understanding of how moral education can serve as a deterrent against drug abuse. Furthermore, the research supports evidence-based strategies that integrate religious teachings with modern educational practices for community betterment. The study ultimately aims to empower communities with improved educational frameworks.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the effects of religious education on students’ perspectives on drug abuse within the confines of Jos South LGA, Plateau State. It exclusively examines the influence of religious teachings integrated into school curricula and does not account for other external factors. The study’s scope is confined to the selected population of students and does not generalize to all educational institutions. Methodological constraints, such as sample size and self-reporting biases, may also affect the findings.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Religious Education: Instruction that incorporates religious beliefs, values, and practices as part of the curriculum.

  • Drug Abuse: The harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including illegal drugs.

  • Perspective: A particular attitude or viewpoint held by individuals regarding specific issues.
